DustLight 1, portable lamp

Sowden 2025

RADICAL UNCERTAINTY exhibition by George Sowden | from November 2025

Radical Uncertainty is the condition in which the ability to predict the outcomes of a project, is swept away by the speed of cultural, technological, and social changes. Uncertainty in this case is no longer a temporary anomaly, but a permanent, radical reality. If the future cannot be planned, then it must be invented. Starting with the use of their own technology, SOWDEN invited a group of designers to imagine a lamp. No brief. No rules. No conceptual constraints. Just relying on intuition. The results are the subject of this exhibition.

“My projects stem from research into materials and production processes; the theme is monomateriality and the possibility of easily breaking down materials so that they can be regenerated. The use of powders is an example of material recomposition: dust is the origin, the beginning of every transformation. DustLight n°1 stems from the relationship between a new material and Sowden technology: imperfection and the unexpected meet the technological precision of the light bulb. DustLight n°1 uses recycled powders cast in molds: n°1 because the first lamp is dedicated to glass powder.

The result is a shape in which structure and diffuser coincide: compact and resistant, carrying with it the memory of what was once waste and the possibility of regeneration into light. Thank you, George!”
